WHY OUR CAMP?

What we do & why we do it...

BASIC FUNDAMENTALS

Expect your son/daughter attending our camp to receive appropriate age level fundamentals instruction. We spend a good deal of time focusing on ball handling, proper shooting mechanics, and defense. These individual fundamentals must be strong in order for a player to contribute to a winning basketball team. Ball handling is the foundation for being a great player. At every level of basketball, the best offensive player on the floor is the best ball handler. Having the “ball on a string” allows players to be better passers, make more aggressive offensive plays, and results in fewer turnovers.

HOW TO PLAY THE GAME - INDIVIDUAL SKILL DEVELOPMENT

In addition to these basic fundamentals, we also focus on how to play the game. Players will be taught 1-on-1 offensive moves that will be effective within the context of a successful offense.  Less dribbling, using the dribble effectively, Primary moves, Secondary moves, how to attack based upon how a player is guarding you, and how to finish strongly. We are looking to eliminate players dribbling too much while teammates are standing watching.

We then progress into how to get open effectively in a game, using different cuts, V-cut and backdoor cuts. Too many players in today’s game can’t get open and end up standing around watching, creating more turnovers for the player with the ball.

Learning how to screen and use screens effectively is our next area of focus. Off-ball screens that put pressure on the defense to help and take focus off the player with the ball. Players learn that setting a good screen can actually help them to get a good shot even more so than being screened for.

HOW TO PLAY THE GAME - TEAM FOCUSED

The next step is utilizing these fundamentals in a game situation. Being able to execute consistently at a high intensity is the key to having a successful team. We continue to teach all of the fundamentals within our 3-on-3, 4-on-4, and 5-on-5 game situations. Each group has an excellent coach from the area teaching and coaching them in game situations. Our goal is to help them not resort back to poor fundamentals when they start competing in a game situation.

COMPETITIONS

The last aspect of our camp we believe to be of great importance is competing. We have Shooting league, Team 21, 1-on-1, and hot shot competitions. This is a vital aspect of all winning teams. A desire to compete and do well against any competition. Striving to be the best.

At Love of the Game we conduct our camp as we would a practice during the year, with purpose, with intensity, and with competitiveness. All of these are done age appropriately.  Younger kids are exposed to the game in a fun manner with more games and fun drills. The higher grades are competing to be starters on next year's team and some will be preparing to compete to go to the state tournament. Regardless of ability, we believe your camper will leave with the knowledge, skills, and desire to become a better player over the off-season. To do so, they must spend time developing these skills. There is no substitute for hard work, putting in the time, in the gym, to become a better player.
